Solar Power, No Roof Required: Your Guide to Community Solar

Montgomery County Community Solar
Solar Power: No Roof, No Problem.
Your Guide to Community Solar
Remember playing nice in the sandbox? Community solar is kind of like that—sharing a solar farm with your neighbors and splitting the benefits. No roof required, no maintenance headaches, just clean energy credits showing up on your bill each month.
What’s the Deal?
This post is going to sound like an ad for Ameren, but I promise we’ve recieved no payment or extra kilowatts under the table—we just really like it.
Basically Ameren's community solar program lets you subscribe to a slice of their solar farms (like the one at Lambert Airport or Montgomery County) for a tiny $25 one-time fee. You can now cover up to 100% of your electricity usage—it’s like having solar panels without having to worry about where that giant oak tree casts its shade!
Oh those gorgeous old oak trees, they do give Tower Grove its character? They're also exactly why we couldn't put solar panels on our roof, even though we'd been thinking about solar for years. When we heard about Ameren's community solar program in 2022, we figured we'd give it a try and got on the waiting list.
We finally got connected at the end of last year under their original block-based program, which lets us get 50% of our power from solar. While there's a newer program now that goes up to 100%, we're sticking with our current setup since we locked in a lower rate. It's pretty interesting to see that "solar" line item on our bill each month, though honestly, we're still figuring out exactly how the credits work and whether we're saving money. What we do know is that half our electricity now comes from solar, which was our main goal, and we didn't have to touch our old trees or our roof to make it happen.
And here's something we didn't realize at first—this isn't just for homeowners. If you're renting in Tower Grove and have your own Ameren account, you can sign up too. That $25 enrollment fee is way more manageable than installing panels, and since you can cancel anytime, you're not locked in if you move.
Let's Talk Numbers:
One-time enrollment fee: $25 (that's it!)

No equipment to maintain, no surprise repair bills
